If you’ve got a surround sound speaker, then the only thing left to do is wire up your favorite music! This video will show how easy it can be.
You can’t always buy surround sound in stores, so you need to know how to wire your own speakers. It is not difficult, but it does take time and patience.
If you are looking for a way to prewire your ceiling speakers, there are many different ways to do so. You can use wire nuts, zip ties, or even electrical tape.
Many individuals believe that their ‘Home Theater’ must have surround sound. Obviously, surround sound is required, but surround sound may be beneficial in a variety of situations.
There’s also no reason why you shouldn’t have many surround sound systems in your house. It’s important having some strong external sound, especially with TVs growing thinner by the day.
Surround Sound Can Be Used Almost Anywhere
Surround sound may be installed at the pool, in the garage, in the Master Bedroom, the Master Bath, and in the Hot Tub. Surround Sound on a client’s back patio was one of my favorite installations. The subwoofers were even installed in his ceiling. He loves it, and the sound is fantastic! So use your imagination and have some fun with it.

Here are a few things to keep in mind with surround sound.
- Speakers may be mounted on the wall, in the ceiling, or in a mix of the two.
- Subwoofers may be installed in the wall or in the ceiling. They don’t have to be on the floor.
- Speakers may or may not be seen. It’s right, you read that correctly. You can get invisible speakers if you desire the sound but don’t like what it will do to the room’s aesthetic. They aren’t cheap, but they sound amazing and, while you can’t see them, they look nice before the sheetrock is put up.
Speakers
Each speaker will get (1) 16/2. (speaker wire). You pull the same cable whether the speaker is in the ceiling or the wall. Some individuals now choose to pull a cable that can offer greater electricity. If you’re one of those folks, your speaker may be a 14/2 or even a 12/2. This is common in dedicated Home Theaters, but it’s generally overkill for your house’s secondary surround sound systems.
Subwoofers
- A RG6 cable is required for floorstanding subwoofers (Coax). The Coax should be placed adjacent to the outlet, such that while the sub is sitting on the floor, it obscures both the Coax and the outlet.
- Subwoofers in the wall and ceiling — These use standard speaker cable. So whatever speaker cable you’re using for the other surround speakers, use it for the subwoofer as well.
*If you’re planning on installing an in-ceiling sub, you’ll need to choose a subwoofer first and read the manufacturer’s comments. When installing subwoofers into the ceiling, for example, Paradigm needs two subwoofers.
In the Prewiring the Home Theater piece, we go through 5.1 vs. 7.1 and Dolby Atmos in more detail, but I believe that any space is a solid option for a 5.1 setup.
