Custom Amazon Alexa Command

This article will cover how to create an Amazon Alexa command that is specific to your use case. This process will help you save time by avoiding the need for manual micromanagement of a voice-enabled device and free up your phone’s screen for other tasks.

“Alexa, list all commands” is a custom command that allows you to list all the available commands for your Amazon Alexa device. The command can be used in conjunction with other commands, such as “alexa list my devices”. Read more in detail here: alexa command list.

Alexa allows you to create your own own voice command.

Make up a sentence and decide what Alexa will do when you say it. A custom Alexa command is a terrific way to use your voice to manage your smart lighting. This tutorial will teach you how to use the Alexa app to build an Alexa routine using a custom voice command.

What is an Alexa Routine, and how does it work?

In the Alexa App, a routine is a set of actions performed by Alexa when it is activated or begun. The list of triggers for starting the program is expanding all the time. When this occurs, you may now begin a routine:

  1. When you say anything, your voice has a certain tone to it. Create your own Amazon Alexa skill! To begin the activities you chose, you may use any term you wish. Alexa routines are well known for their custom voice commands.
  2. Schedule (At a Predetermined Time) — This time-based trigger is designed for Amazon Echo customers who desire basic home automation but don’t have access to a smart home controller like SmartThings. Find out why I think the SmartThings Hub is a good idea.
  3. Home Automation – Send a command depending on what your smart home gadgets are doing. When a door is opened, for example.
  4. Start an Alexa routine when your phone arrives or departs from a certain area.
  5. Alarm – When your Alexa alarm clock goes off, start activities.
  6. Start an action with the press of a button using the Echo Button.
  7. When Alexa Guard is armed or disarmed, start a routine.

You may choose which actions will be executed when a routine is activated. Here’s a quick rundown of what your Echo device can do:

  1. Alexa Says — Ask Alexa to say a sentence from a list of options. Birthdays, praises, coming/going, good morning/night, and more expressions are included in the list.
  2. The Flash Briefing that you put up in the app will be played by Alexa.
  3. Smart Home – Use the Alexa app to control any smart home device, group, or scene. This is the section of the lesson where we’ll spend the most time.
  4. Get a report on the current traffic in your region.
  5. Weather – Find out what the weather is like in your location.
  6. Custom – Silently send any voice command to your Amazon Echo or Fire TV devices. Very effective!

Calendar readings, date and time information, device settings, read email, happy news, set Guard to away, IFTTT, messaging, music, talents, Fire TV controls, and more are among the other activities available.

In your routine, you may build a list of activities from any or all of these categories. I was able to design a routine with 21 activities without difficulty, thus it should be able to suit your needs.

Create a Light Routine and Amazon Alexa Command that is unique to you.

Alexa can conduct a sequence of actions on several lights in your smart home with just one personalized Alexa query.

Alexa. I’m going to sleep now.

Alexa shuts off all of your downstairs lights save the one you need to look up to the second floor. Alexa then switches on the bedroom lights and dims the hallway lights to half-power. You may construct any command and use it to control any of your home’s smart lights. The Routine function in the Amazon Alexa app makes this simple.

What Do You Need from Alexa?

If you’re not managing a smart home device, you can build a custom Alexa routine with only your Echo Device. We’ll be managing smart house lights in this project, so you’ll need the following:

1. Amazon Echo Device – There are a variety of Amazon Echo devices available. Check out how to utilize the Amazon Echo in your smart home or see the pricing on Amazon.

2. Intelligent light switch or intelligent light bulbs

It’s not an issue if there aren’t any lights on. With the Philips Hue Hub, you can rapidly add or extend smart lighting across your home. See why I think the Philips Hue Hub is a good idea.

White Philips Hue LED Starter Kit

  • WHAT’S IN THE BOX: Three Philips Hue White A19 60W LED Smart bulbs (fits most lamps, overhead lights, and 4-inch recessed cans); a Philips Hue hub that can reliably operate up to 50 Hue lights without delaying your Wi-Fi; and one Smart Button with mounting plates are included in each package.
  • VOICE ACTIVATED: These Smart Bulbs link to your favorite smart home devices, such as Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Google Assistant, through the Hue Hub, for the ultimate smart home experience.
  • SET UP YOUR OWN PERSONAL LIGHT SCENES: You can use the Philips Hue App to create morning rituals, have your lights recognize when you approach home, or gradually turn off your smart lights as you get ready for bed.

Create an Amazon Alexa command that is unique to you.

Here’s how to create a custom Alexa command step by step. These commands are simple to make and really useful around the home.

Step 1: Open the Alexa menu and go to the ‘Routines’ section.

In the Amazon Alexa App menu, go to the Routines area.Step 2: To create a new Routine, click the Plus symbol in the upper right corner.

When you access the routines section, you’ll get a list of all the routines that are enabled or disabled. To add a new routine, click the “+” button in the upper right corner.

Step 3: To construct your own Amazon Alexa command, choose “When this occurs” and then “Voice.”

Create the trigger for the routine to begin with. This is in the menu’s “when this occurs” section. Second, for your routine, build a voice or time-based trigger. We’re going to create a custom voice command for this procedure.

Step 4: To start the program, type in your personalized phrase.

To begin the process, type in your own phrase, which will be the voice command you give Alexa. Put a comma after your statement, not a period.

Step 5: Choose ‘Add action,’ ‘Smart Home,’ and the device, group, or scenario you want to manage.

We’ll now design the activities that will occur when you utter the trigger command. Select ‘add action’ and then ‘Smart Home’ from the drop-down menu. After that, you may operate a gadget, a group, or a scenario.

Step 6: Choose the activities you’d want to do on the device.

Select the object you wish to operate from your device list by scrolling through it. Select the actions you want to happen (on/off, dim level, color, etc.) and then select next. A confirmation screen will appear at the end of the process, summarizing the device and the steps that will be done. To add it to your regimen, click next.

Step 7: Add as many actions as you like by repeating the steps above.

Complete your program by including all of your activities. I successfully added 21 devices to one routine as a test. This is a rare occurrence, but it demonstrates the power of Alexa routines. To finish your routine, click Save once you’ve included all of the activities.

Step 8: Go through your Alexa routine again and put it to the test.

In the enabled routines area, your routine should be listed. Speak your routine to Alexa to see whether it works.

Alexa. I’m going to sleep now.

By choosing it in the app’s Routines section, you may modify your own routine. You may also temporarily deactivate the procedure to prevent Alexa from responding to it. Any of your smart home gadgets may be controlled by routines. Simply have a good time and be creative!

What other options do I have?

The Amazon Echo devices provide you a number of voice control options for your smart home lighting. Here are some more instructions on using Alexa to control lights with your voice:

  1. Create Light Groups — Use a single command to control a group of lights or light bulbs.
  2. Create Context Aware Lights – Simply say “turn on lights,” and Alexa will recognize the lights you want to switch on.

Alexa is also fantastic when it comes to music. See which speakers are ideal for your Echo Dot.
